Physical Education
The teachers in Scoil Oilibhéir Naofa recognise the importance of Physical Education in the curriculum. Each class is timetabled for a minimum of 60 minutes per week which ensures that each strand-Athletics, Games, Dance, Gymnastics and Outdoor and Adventure (Aquatics 3rd, 5th classes only) is taught over the course of the year.
This year, the staff prioritised Gymnastics for further development.(We applied to PDST for support, but this was unavailable).
However, teachers with an interest and expertise in this area worked on a 4 - 6 week plan with each class grouping, (Junior/Senior Infants, 1st/2nd, 3rd/4th, 5th/6th).
We chose the theme of Balance & Travelling and using the “PSSI” lesson plans, we outlined exactly what would be taught in each class. We planned a progression of lessons from Infants to 6th class, which included balancing on large body parts, balancing on small body parts, travelling using different parts of the body, doing individual, partner and group work and finally creating a sequence of balances and movement.
We decided to do the Gymnastic strand during the months of April and May. Teachers planned to take photographs at the beginning and end of the period.
